  • Ronacrete Awarded ISO 14001 Accreditation

Ronacrete has proved its commitment to the environment by being awarded ISO 14001 Accreditation Certificate Number E8342.
    Managing Director, Daniel Osen stated:

“Ronacrete has been making efforts to reduce its carbon footprint in line with the Ronacrete Environmental Policy. A significant amount of time has been spent evaluating Ronacrete’s impact on the environment and looking at ways to make the company more environmentally friendly. We now for example, have different methods of waste handling, more efficient company cars, use less paper, purchase more materials from local sources and seek out sustainable raw materials and packaging.

“The ISO 14001 certification means these efforts have been evaluated and approved by an independent body (NQA) and will provide reassurance to those specifying Ronacrete’s products as it is physical proof that Ronacrete conforms to set environmental standards.”

ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS) and is recognised worldwide. ISO 14001:2004 was introduced in 1996 as a British Standard and requires that businesses have an environmental policy and action plan in place to manage their environmental impact.  Once certified companies are then committed to continuous improvement and are assessed annually to ensure progress has been made.

Ronacrete also has ISO 9001 accreditation from NQA the International Standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS) Certificate Number 1763.

  • New “Section 12” registered products brochure from Ronacrete

Ronacrete has produced a new brochure to promote its range of Section 12 registered products for underground railway stations.

Following the Kings Cross fire in 1987 and the Fennell Enquiry into that event, new legislation was enacted in Section 12 of the Fire Precaution Act 1971, namely The Fire Precautions (Sub-Surface Railway Stations) Regulations 1989. Subsequently, the legislation was developed further to become The Fire Precautions (Sub-surface Railway Stations) (England) Regulations 2009. One of the ways London Underground complies with this legislation is to control the use of materials entering below ground stations and locations. This is done by ensuring that materials comply with LU Standard 1-085 ‘Fire Safety Performance of Materials’.

Ronacrete currently holds 23 London Underground Product Registration Certificates for screed, render, concrete repair, bedding mortar and floor sealing products that comply with LU Standard 1-085 “Fire Safety Performance of Materials'’.

  • Eco Resin Bound Surfacing ‘graces’ Lord’s entrance

Visitors to Lord’s Cricket Ground approaching from St John’s Wood will enter via the ornamental Grace Gate which was built in 1923 in honour of the great cricketer W G Grace.

Heavy footfall and years of wear and tear had caused the paved area close to the gate to deteriorate, there was also a drainage problem making the area prone to flooding. FM Conway were contracted to renew the paving by laying resin bound surfacing on an asphalt base.

Installation had to be fitted in to a two day gap in the cricket ground’s busy schedule and the 340 square metres of Eco Resin Bound Surfacing was laid within the available time. Eco Resin Bound Surfacing is strong enough to bear foot traffic just four hours after laying, ensuring that there was no disruption to the client’s schedule.

The Eco Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin, the two components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a forced action mixer which contained the Maple Harvest aggregate blend. The Eco Resin Bound Surfacing was spread to level and the surface was smoothed with a steel float.

Eco Resin Bound Surfacing satisfies SuDS requirements, allowing rainwater to quickly and easily drain through the porous surface, avoiding puddling.  Slip testing shows the risk of slip to be low, an important factor to consider at a busy sporting venue.

  • Ronafix Pre-packed Screed at Sidney Sussex College

South Court is a Grade II Listed Building owned by Sidney Sussex College, part of the Univerisity of Cambridge.  Building Surveyors and Architects Pleasance Hookham and Nix Limited were commissioned to refurbish the property and part of the work required re-waterproofing of the first floor terrace.  The terrace provides access to student accommodation and waterproofing to the rear of the shop units below.

Pleasance Hookham and Nix Limited specified Ronafix Pre-packed Screed 6-50mm to be laid to falls to provide drainage to the new terrace construction, which was to be waterproofed with mastic asphalt and finished with a tiled surface, providing protection to the existing structure below.   Ronafix Pre-packed Screed 6-50mm is designed to be laid as a thin bonded screed and has very low permeability, high strength and negligible shrinkage.  All components of Ronafix Pre-packed Screed 6-50mm are pre-measured in Ronacrete’s factory, giving assurance to the specifier that the screed will perform as expected.

Pleasance Hookham and Nix Limited appointed Cocksedge Building Contractors Limited to carry out the works.  The concrete deck was prepared in accordance with Ronacrete’s recommendations and primed with Ronacrete Standard Primer before Ronafix Pre-packed Screed 6-50mm was laid to falls on the freshly applied primer.  Early application of the asphalt waterproofing was possible because Ronafix Pre-packed Screed 6-50mm dries faster than traditional sand and cement screeds, reducing the delay between application of the screed and waterproofing.

Ronacrete products meet British Standards wherever possible or have BBA Certification. The Ronafix in Ronafix Mix A (on which Ronafix Pre-packed Screed 6-50mm is based) carries BBA certification. Ronacrete holds ISO 9001 certification and quality is assessed to that level.

The launch of Ronacrete’s new EcoBound range drew crowds to the stand and the Ronacrete sales team had barely a minute to spare over the three days of the exhibition, drawing interest right until the exhibition’s closing minutes.

“We were delighted that so many people wanted to find out more about how the EcoBound range offers a range of systems that have eco credentials at every level, sub base, resin, aggregates, even cleaners.

“Many people were drawn to the stand by the “water feature” which showed just how porous our SuDS compliant resin bound systems are, but would then stay to hear about the other eco features.”

Daren Chambers Sales and Marketing Director

EcoBound is an eco fully permeable SuDS compliant system, unlike many other systems in the market produced by companies who just offer recycled aggregates as a token ‘green’ commitment,. From the permeable resin, to the mix-blend aggregate, through the four fully-permeable sub base options, to the cleaners used for the application tools and aftercare.

    1. Permeable (SuDS compliant) resin – contains 38% materials from a renewable source
    2. Four fully permeable bases:
    • EcoGrid – grid base produced from 100% recyclable materials

  • RonaScreed stands up in court

During busy court sessions the waiting area inside Oldham Magistrates Court frequently became overcrowded, so it was decided that the area should be expanded by removing the internal lobby, thus providing more space in the waiting area. A new lobby was then constructed outside the building to provide a new court entrance.

A screed had to be laid to an area of 50 m2 which would raise the floor level up to that of the building’s interior. The new lobby would then be built upon this solid base.  The screed needed to be suitable for exterior application as it would be open to the weather until the building of the new lobby was complete. It was also important that the screed could cure rapidly, so that the entrance could be used the following morning by the many visitors to the court buildings. RonaScreed DPM and RonaScreed Mortar were specified for the project, the DPM was required to suppress the residual moisture in the concrete floor,  RonaScreed Mortar was specified because it is fast curing and suitable for exterior use.

Contractor Foggs Floor prepared the surface of the concrete slab by vacuum shot blasting to ensure it was lightly textured and free from laitance. Loose shot was removed and the surface was pre-wetted with clean water.

RonaScreed DPM was mixed using a slow speed drill fitted with a helical paddle attachment. All the gauging liquid was poured into a mixing vessel and the powder component was slowly added to form a lump free creamy slurry. Two coats Of the DPM were applied to the damp surface by roller. Each coat was allowed to dry before the next application.

Ronacrete Rapid Primer was then applied to the surface immediately before application of RonaScreed Mortar. The primer was mixed thoroughly and applied evenly over the surface ensuring total and uniform coverage.

The RonaScreed Mortar was mixed in a forced action mixer and placed onto the tacky primer, compacted, ruled and closed with a float.

RonaScreed DPM is a liquid applied surface damp proof membrane designed to reduce the passage of water vapour and allow the adhesion of thin bonded and fast drying screeds to concrete which is either not fully dry or does not have a functioning DPM.

RonaScreed Mortar is a rapid strength gain mortar for laying floor screeds and repairing floor surfaces. The speed of RonaScreed Mortar makes it ideal for floor renewal or renovation in working premises (like a courthouse) where floors must be reinstated with minimum disruption and delay.

RonaScreed Mortar is a strong and durable low permeability mortar, capable receiving foot traffic within hours. Its formulation also allows the screed to be applied at a minimum temperature of 0°C making external work possible during cold weather.

  • Bound at the Bush

    Product: RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing
    Area: 7,700m² @ 15mm
    Contractor: F M Conway
    Location: Shepherds Bush, London

What is believed to be the largest single resin bound surfacing project in the UK has been completed using Ronacrete’s RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing where more than 7,500m2 has been laid.

You don’t have to live in London to have heard of Shepherd’s Bush! Home to the BBC, Queen’s Park Rangers, the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and (fictitiously) Steptoe and Son! It is thought that Shepherd’s Bush may be so called because shepherds would rest on the green in the centre on their way to Smithfield market. Shepherd’s Bush Green is a triangular area of open grass surrounded by trees and covers approximately eight acres, various paths for cyclists and pedestrians run across it. There are pavements on all three sides of the perimeter, edging on to three busy shopping streets.

Visitors to the area today won’t see any sheep or shepherds roaming the green, but if they look down and around they will be able to see RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing!

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham appointed specialist contractor FM Conway to lay 7700 square metres of resin bound surfacing to the paths and to paved areas within the park. This was part of a refurbishment project which included improving the routes across and around the Green as well as the planting of further trees and the creation of two children’s play areas.

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin, this was to be mixed with the Maple Harvest aggregate which the Borough had selected.  The resin components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a large forced action mixer containing the aggregate.  Once the aggregate was fully coated with resin FM Conway operatives spread RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing to level and smoothed the surface with a steel float.  The finished surface was ready for foot traffic in four hours.

  • Ronacrete waterproofing hits the height of sustainability in the Far East

Ronacrete is hitting the heights in the Philippines where its products have been approved, specified and used on a massive and prestigious LEED compliant building project, the Zuellig Building, the first “green” office building in Makati City, Manila.

The 155 metre high Zuellig Building houses 33-storeys of office space, a three storey retail annex and five storeys of basement car parking.   The building was the first project in the Philippines to be Pre-Certified at Gold level under the Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design Core and Shell (LEED-CS) programme.  In order to conform to the LEED criteria, a specific set of processes had to be followed through every phase of the project to comply with the energy and environmental principles of the US Green Building Council.  Ronacrete provided independent certification to show that all Ronacrete products supplied to the project met the requirement for low VOC content.

Ronacrete products were used for waterproofing, screeding and rendering in; basements, wash rooms, roof areas, roof level planters, lift lobbies, machine rooms, lift shafts and water tanks.

Unidri Super 20 was applied extensively to waterproof the reinforced concrete walls on all five below-ground storeys and to protect plant, machinery and parking areas.

Ronabond PU 55 injection resin was used on the lowest basement level to rectify water leaks through day joints and fissures.

Monoprufe WP Elastic was applied to all water storage tanks to accommodate movement and to maintain a waterproof barrier; Ronafix Mix A mortar was applied as a protective layer to the waterproofing.  The tanks are used to collect surface rainwater for use as washroom flushing water.

Monoprufe WP Elastic and Ronafix Mix A1 were used in all the washrooms to stop any possible water leakage into the rooms below.

The roof areas and open planters were waterproofed with Monoprufe WP Elastic and Ronafix Mix A1 screed was used to provide falls before closed cell PU insulation panels were laid.

All lift lobbies, machine rooms and lift shafts were treated with Ronafix screed or render. Ronaflex PU 1 sealant was extensively used around the building to provide a water tight seal at joint details.

All exterior concrete pavers at ground level were bedded on Ronafix modified mortars. The water feature was waterproofed with Monoprufe WP Elastic, protected by Ronafix mortar.  The black granite panels were bonded with RonaBond Super Tile Adhesive and grouted with Ronafix Colour Grout.

Power costs are high in the Philippines, so cost efficiency and sustainability are very important; occupants of the building will enjoy energy savings of at least 15%. Green features include: double glazing and low emissivity glass to minimise heat gain and energy loss, water efficiency through rainwater capture plus very efficient drainage and irrigation systems, power save lighting, CO2 sensors to ensure air quality and centralised paper recycling. Ronacrete takes pride in being involved in a project noted for design excellence as well as being of benefit to sustainability.

  • Fast drying screed means time saving at Greenwich school

Eltham Hill Technology College was one of five schools transformed by the London Borough of Greenwich as part of Building Schools for the Future. The project was 80% new build and 20% refurbishment. The new build involved the provision of a learning resource centre, teaching rooms, dining amenities, suites for ICT, music and drama plus new sports facilities.

The flooring division of Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Ltd was contracted by Balfour Beatty to install and lay a RonaScreed 8 Day Overlay Fast Drying Screed to floors within the school.

RonaScreed 8 Day Overlay is ideal for fast-track projects where early access is required and is therefore suitable for education, commercial, hospital, retail and domestic projects. It is frequently used as a floating screed on insulation boards and on underfloor heating when it’s fast drying and good early strength gain allows early commissioning of heating systems.

The prepared screed can be pumped to the point of application as was the case at Eltham School, where Cemplas pumped the screed onto the floors in Blocks A and B using a Putzmeister 760 Screed Pump.

Adding Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay to a screed enables earlier access by following trades and reduces drying time. Screeds can be laid later in the construction program, reducing likely damage by following trades and saving unexpected bills for surface DPMs.

RonaScreed 8 Day Overlay is available as a screed additive named RonaScreed 8 Day Overlay Fast Drying Screed and in pre-packed form as RonaScreed 8 Day Overlay Pre-packed Fast Drying Screed.

  • Quality repair amongst the rubbish

Back in June 2004 the concrete access road to the Barrowell Green Recycling Centre had spalled making the surface uneven and a potential hazard to the many vehicles that pass across it.

Civil Engineering Contractors AH Nicholls were contracted by the London Borough of Enfield to carry out the concrete repair as part of a general refurbishment project at the centre. A H Nicholls specified Ronacrete’s RonaScreed Concrete to fill the voids in the concrete and to create a level surface. RonaScreed Concrete is a 2 component mortar comprising bagged cement/ fillers and polymer gauging liquid which is applied to prepared concrete that has been primed with Ronacrete Rapid primer.

The concrete was saw cut at repair edges to form a square edge and concrete within the saw cuts was scabbled to a depth of approximately 40 to 50 mm before thorough removal of oil and other contamination. All loose materials were removed from exposed surfaces before the concrete was dampened with clean water and primer was brush into to the damp surface.

RonaScreed Concrete was mixed in a forced action mixer and immediately placed onto the wet/ tacky primer; very thick sections were placed wet on wet in layers of equal thickness to ensure good compaction. The mortar was closed with a steel float and the repairs were ready for traffic 6 hours later. .

In 2012 Ian Hofton from AH Nicholls returned to the site and noticed that while the surrounding concrete had become spalled, the repaired sections were still holding strong.

“It is interesting to find that these reinstatements are largely intact and the surrounding concrete is now in a spalled state leaving the patches standing proud. The depot takes a lot of traffic and I feel that it is a testament to Ronacrete’s products”.

Simeon Osen, Managing Director or Ronacrete added.

“While I am delighted to hear of the durability of this product, I am not surprised. RonaScreed Concrete has historically been used for repairing concrete slabs in the most onerous of service conditions, the excellent condition of the repairs at Barrowell Green, despite failure of the concrete surrounding them endorses our confidence in the product.”

The speed of curing of RonaScreed Concrete makes it ideal for floor renewal or renovation in factories, warehouses, loading bays, on ramps and other areas of concrete that must be reinstated with minimum disruption and delay. The formulation allows it to be applied at temperatures as low as 0°C, facilitating external work during cold weather.

  • RonaDeck Tree Pit System enhances building project at Middlesbrough School

Ronacrete Approved Contractor Route One Highways laid over 200 square metres of RonaDeck Tree Pit System at Beverley and Tollesby School, Middlesbrough.

The landscaping work was part of a large new school building project combining two special schools in the area which provide education for students with autism and behavioural needs.

The new trees planted at the school are relatively small, but will grow and develop over the years and will provide pupils of the future with a green pleasant environment in which to learn.

The RonaDeck Tree Pit System protects the trees from damage without inhibiting their growth. The tree pit system surrounds the tree in a solid but porous construction which allows the passage of water to the tree roots and keeps the tree nourished and healthy. Ideal for use in public areas such as school playgrounds, streets, car parks and other areas where tree are enclosed by hard landscaping, it is easy to keep clean and so prevents the build up of hazardous and unsightly litter which often accumulates in tree pits, particularly the recesses of metal grilles

  • Westward Ho! for Resin Bound

Ronacrete Approved Contractor Avalon Surfacing has transformed the promenade and village green footpaths at Westward Ho! seafront by laying RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, part of a refurbishment project by Torridge District Council.

The promenade was surfaced by Avalon Surfacing using RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing by Ronacrete, who created two unique aggregate blends for the project. A golden aggregate blend covering 636 square metres and a further 668 square metres of a yellow aggregate blend was laid to the village green footpaths.

When Avalon Surfacing were approached by Torridge District Council for samples of aggregate mixes and costings for the project, Avalon Surfacing turned to Ronacrete for assistance and were able to respond quickly with suitable colour suggestions and a favourable pricing structure.

The brief from the council was to give ‘a modern new finish to the promenade and footpaths to replace the tired grey tarmac that had been there for many years’

The gold and yellow combination gives a warm glow to the area even in the dullest of summer weather a .colourful contrast to the red pirate ship in the children’s play area!

"Ronacrete responded quickly providing us with samples of unique colour blends to match the councils requirements and the competiive pricing ensured we won the contract." - Chris Masters, Avalon Surfacing

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system is supplied as a two component UV stable polyurethane resin together with a blend of kiln-dried aggregates for on-site mixing in a forced action mixer. The two resin components were mixed by Avalon with a drill and paddle before being added to the coloured aggregate in a high capacity forced action mixer. As soon as the aggregate was fully coated with resin, the mixed material was discharged from the mixer and trowel applied at a thickness of 12mm onto the prepared surface.  The finished system was ready for foot traffic within four hours of being laid.

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing is a resin and aggregate mix which creates a hard wearing alternative to traditional paving and comes with a 15 year guarantee when laid by a Ronacrete Approved Contractor such as Avalon Surfacing.  The resin is UV resistant so it will not darken or ‘yellow’ when exposed to sunlight, ensuring that the natural colour of the aggregate does not alter as the surfacing ages. The surfacing is also SuDS compliant, as it has a porous structure which prevents surface ponding of rainwater and will allow water to drain naturally when part of a SuDS* compliant construction.

The aggregate provides slip-resistance, while the elasticity of the resin creates a ‘give’ to the surface, meaning that holiday makers and local residents in Westward Ho! can have a safe and comfortable walking experience which is also pleasing to the eye.

  • Sesame Gold path ready for Diamond celebration

The Queen’s Silver Jubilee was marked with the creation of the Jubilee Walkway, an integral part of which was the introduction of pedestrian access along the south bank of the Thames, known as Queen’s Walk.

As part of preparations for the Diamond Jubilee thirty five years later Lambeth Council made the decision to have the area ‘smartened up’. Part of this operation was to replace the worn resin bound surfacing on the Queen’s Walk between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges. The surfacing needed to be laid in time for the Jubilee celebrations which would attract many tourists, particularly for the Jubilee Pageant when crowds would line the banks of the Thames watching over 1,000 vessels participate in a flotilla from Battersea to Tower Bridge..

FM Conway were contracted to lay new resin bound surfacing to 2700 square metres of the 5 metre wide pathway and Sesame Gold aggregate was selected to brighten up the route.

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin, the two components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a large forced action mixer containing the Sesame Gold aggregate blend. FM Conway spread the RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing to level and smoothed the surface with a steel float. The finished surface was ready for foot traffic within four hours.

Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing satisfies SuDS requirements, allowing rainwater to quickly and easily drain through the porous surface, avoiding puddling. Slip testing shows risk of slip to be generally low, an important consideration for a busy walkway.

The resin bound surfacing was completed in time for the crowds to watch the Jubilee Pageant. Now the ‘golden path’ provides a route which takes tourists and commuters past many well known buildings and locations in the capital city. Starting at Waterloo Bridge it runs past the National Film Theatre and the National Theatre through Gabriel’s Wharf, past the IBM building and London Television Centre alongside Bernie Spain Gardens and through Oxo Tower Wharf passing the art-deco Oxo Tower and Sea Containers House, finishing at Blackfriars Bridge close to the Tate Modern.

  • RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing featured on ITV’s This Morning

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing featured on ITV’s This Morning as part of the series Sewing the Seeds of Love where Garden designer Diarmuid Gavin is sent around the country surprising worthy citizens with a garden makeover.

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing was used in a garden makeover at Heytesbury Primary School in Warminster, Wiltshire. The garden was the idea of 10 year old pupil Archie who requested a memorial garden for his sister Isobel who died of a brain tumour whilst a pupil at the school.

The idea resulted in the existing area being transformed by Diarmuid and his team. The dull black macadam surfacing was overlaid with RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing using Sesame Gold aggregate to create a more cheery and attractive setting for the many flowers and shrubs planted in Isobel’s memory.

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing was donated by specialist manufacturer Ronacrete and laid by Trowbridge based and Ronacrete approved PJJ Contractors Ltd. who also provided their services free of charge for this worthy cause. It was laid over a weekend ready for the feet of the many excited children whose reactions were filmed by the This Morning team.

“When Archie made this request we were delighted for Ronacrete to be able to play its part in this wonderful tribute to Isobel’s memory. We hope the children of Heytesbury School derive pleasure from the garden for many years to come.”

  • RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing chosen for unique property

The property owner employed BPR Architects to design Downley House as his family home.  Downley House was built on the site of old farm buildings set within the newly formed South Downs National Park. Part of the original house has been retained as a folly adjacent to the main house. The building incorporates a family wing and a guest wing linked by a barrel vaulted dining hall over the entrance to the original property, the barrel vaulted roof is just one of a number of barrel themes to be seen in the design, partly a reference to the owner’s history in the wine business. Other interesting features are a copper roof and glass surround spiral staircase leading to a roof terrace. Work began on the development in the summer of 2010 and the project finally reached completion in spring 2012.

Ronacrete Approved Contractor PRC Landscapes was employed to carry out  groundworks and landscaping on the 3 acre site, including application of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing.

The SuDS compliant two-part aggregate system was applied to 650 square metres of a suitable macadam substrate including patios, the driveway and turning circle.  The aggregate selected was Harvest Crunch, a blend of naturally coloured aggregates in keeping with the house surroundings. The aggregate colour will not change over time because the elastic polyurethane resin does not degrade when exposed to Ultra Violet light.

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied in two components which were mixed together with a drill and paddle before being added to the aggregate blend. The aggregate and resin were then mixed in a high capacity forced action mixer. The mixed material was poured onto the substrate, spread to level and trowel finished at a thickness of 15mm.   After completion the paving was ready for foot traffic within four hours and ready for vehicles after 1-2 days.

  • RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing - ends an uphill struggle in Whitstable

Resin Solutions Ltd, (Kent) was approached by the skipper of a fishing trawler in Whitstable who was having problems with his macadam driveway.

The drive was on a fairly steep slope and this combined with the lack of slip resistance provided by the macadam meant that vehicles could not get off the drive in icy conditions. As the driveway owner needed to be able to get to work in all weathers he needed to find a surface that would provide sufficient grip for vehicles to pass at sub zero temperatures. Another problem encountered was that the macadam was becoming uneven in places and breaking away from the surface, causing stones to get trodden into the house.

Resin Solutions Ltd discussed various surfacing options with the client and a decision was made to use RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing. It was chosen for its long life expectancy and because it could be used to level off minor surface irregularities in the macadam.

  • Gogar Tram Depot – slip resistant epoxy resin coating protects the floor and enhances safety

The Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) is an improvement programme focusing on the Edinburgh to Glasgow rail corridor. Its aim is to make Edinburgh airport and nearby business developments more accessible by public transport by improving the train services and integrating them with the Edinburgh tram system. Part of the programme included the construction of a new tram depot at Gogar.

The depot building includes a two storey accommodation block incorporating staff offices and associated staff facilities plus the tramway system control room. The depot also houses main workshop areas, an internal tram wash area, maintenance pits for tram maintenance as well as stabling areas where the trams are due to be located overnight.

The client’s design brief called for a robust anti-slip coating for the floor, it needed to be: hard wearing, slip resistant, easily cleaned and resistant to chemicals. After consultation with Ronacrete’s technical department, Parsons Brinckerhoff specified RonaFloor HB100, a solvent free epoxy resin coating with additional anti-slip aggregate.

RonaFloor HB100 is suitable for use on concrete, screeded and granolithic floors. Its resistance to abrasion by constant traffic, its tolerance of train wash chemicals and oil spills made it particularly suitable for the tram depot. It is available in a variety of colours to clearly define hazardous areas.

The main contractor, Barr Construction appointed Industrial Floor Treatments Ltd to carry out the coating works.  After approval of a trial, Industrial Floor Treatments laid approximately 5000m2 of RonaFloor HB100 in the specified colours.  The concrete substrate was prepared by captive shotblasting before the first coat of RonaFloor HB100 was applied by roller.  Kiln dried aggregate was scattered into the fresh resin to provide slip resistance and a second coat was applied to encapsulate the aggregate and produce a hygienic and wear resistant surface.

  • Cuffley Eco Home surrounded by SuDS compliant surfacing

A property within a development of quality eco-homes in Cuffley, Hertfordshire has extended its green credentials by having SuDS compliant RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing laid to the front driveway and  to paths on either side of the ‘high spec’ residence.

Ronacrete Approved Contractors ARC Surfacing laid approximately 200 square metres of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, using a 6mm Maple Harvest aggregate which was chosen from the RonaDeck range of natural aggregate blends, each formulated for strength and appearance. The surfacing will not discolour over time because the specially formulated polyurethane resin does not yellow or darken when exposed to Ultra Violet light.

To create a firm foundation for the resin bound paving ARC Surfacing first laid a sound base of asphalt  After allowing this time to harden they mixed the RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing two-component resin together with the supplied blended kiln-dried aggregate and laid it by trowel at 18mm thick.

Within just four hours the surface was hard enough to walk on and was ready for cars after 1-2 days.

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing complies with SuDS* regulations which requires that rain water can pass through the aggregate and resin surface into the earth below, allowing it to flow into natural water courses or ground drainage systems. Its porous design ensures water can quickly and easily permeate the surface and allow homeowners to do their part to protect the environment.

  • Ronacrete and Cemplas team together in refurbishment of Art-Deco building

During the refurbishment of the old Barkers store in Kensington High Street, the RG Group appointed Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Ltd to lay in excess of 3,750m2 of Ronafix Polymer modified screed to the waterproofed areas on the Lower ground floor and the mezzanine first floor. The Barkers Building is a  beautiful example of Art-Deco architecture and is now occupied by the organic food emporium,  Whole Foods Market.

The Ronafix screed required laying with a thickness varying from 6mm up to 100mm. When laying a modified SBR screed correct batching and mixing is essential. Each component must be properly measured by weight or volume and mixed to provide a mortar with the lowest possible water content but sufficient liquid to allow good compaction and a good surface finish. The mix design was carried out by a Cemplas pump operative and pumped through a Putzmeister screed pump.

‘Ronacrete has a strong relationship with Cemplas resulting from  the professionalism of the Cemplas team; from their support and communications through to their representation and application of Ronacrete products. We are proud to have worked together on the refurbishment of this iconic building’.

  • On the way to Wembley – RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing

Wembley Stadium, home to the FA Cup and venue for the football finals of the 2012 Olympics, can house 90,000 seated fans and a further 15,000 standing. At the Take That concert in the summer of 2011, 623,737 people attended the eight shows at the stadium.

These enormous crowds of sport and music fans enter the stadium via a series of ramps which lead into the stadium at five levels. RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing was chosen to provide a hardwearing and slip resistant surfacing to the tarmac ramps, ensuring that crowds can gain access to the Stadium in safety in even the wettest of weather conditions.

Specialist contractor Entech Services Ltd was employed to apply Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing with Medium Grade Guyanan Bauxite slip resistant aggregate to macadam on 4500 square metres of ramp. The surface of the macadam was mostly tightly closed – ideal for this highly specialised surfacing system.  Open textured areas were closed using RonaDeck Resin Bonded Scratch Coat to prevent the resin draining through and to ensure an adequate thickness of resin to secure and bond the aggregate to the surface.

RonaDeck Resin Bonded Scratch Coat was mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle and scraped across the surface of the macadam, filling the voids in the surface  After just one hour the surface was ready to be receive the Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing.  The resin components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before application by squeegee and roller to the surface at the specified thickness. The Guyanan Bauxite aggregate was immediately scattered into the wet resin and left to cure for four hours.  Excess aggregate was then vacuumed  away and RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing Seal Coat UV roller applied to bind and protect  the surface for ease of cleaning, leaving the ramps ready for foot and service vehicle traffic.

  • RonaDeck Tree Pit protects life enhancing Hackney trees

London is and always has been a tree lined city. Some of the benefits are obvious, trees are beautiful to look at – marking the seasons with blossom, seeds and changing leaf colours, they provide homes to a variety of wildlife and on a more practical level create shade and shelter.

Trees have invisible benefits too; absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as part of the photosynthesis process which allows them to grow. This removal of CO2 from the atmosphere trees can reduce the effects of pollution by cleaning the air and reducing temperatures. Large leaf canopies catch rainfall and slow down the water’s progress from sky to the ground, helping to reduce flash flooding.

Trees also release oxygen into the atmosphere and their leaves catch dust and pollutants in the air preventing them from spreading further, they reduce smog formation, radiant energy from the sun is absorbed or deflected by leaves, this combination of factors reduces the incidence of asthma, skin cancer and stress-related illness.

Trees can even reduce crime! The presence of trees creates a more pleasant environment that people want to go out and enjoy. Simply having more people around to potentially discover and report crime and this deters criminal activity.

Many London Boroughs have embraced the need to preserve existing trees, replace diseased and dead trees and plant new trees, but planting and maintaining trees in an urban environment is not without problems.

A tree’s root system obviously needs access to water in order for the tree to survive, the roots also need to be able to move as they grow. However a natural earth setting is not possible in a pedestrianised street as it can get very muddy, slippery and be hard to keep leaf and litter free and trees are at risk of root damage or being uprooted entirely. Traditional tree grilles provide irrigation and protection for the tree roots but they are difficult to keep clean as litter, dog waste, cigarette stubs and even hypodermic needles get deposited or trapped between the bars.

The London Borough of Hackney asked Civil Engineering Contractor Volker Fitzpatrick to solve the problem of protecting the roots of the many trees which enhance the streets of Hackney, situated on the doorstep of the Olympic site.

RonaDeck Tree Pit System from Ronacrete was recommended for its SuDS compliance, ease of maintenance, flexibility and for the appearance of the resin bound gravel.

Ronadeck Tree Pit System is a natural aggregate finish surround for planted trees in public and private areas. Ronadeck Tree Pit System surrounds the tree in a solid yet flexible construction that is easily swept clean and has a porous structure that allows rainwater to seep immediately through to the root system and reduces the burden on surface water drainage.

Sub contractor AJ O’Connor purchased the RonaDeck Tree Pit System through specialist construction industry distributor WT Burdens and gradually the system has been applied over a large area.

AJ O’Connor excavated around each tree to a depth of 150-200mm and filled the excavation with gravel to within 50 mm - 75 mm of the surface, the required depth of Ronadeck Tree Pit System, depending on expected traffic. The two-part resin was mixed with a drill and paddle before being added to the kiln-dried aggregate component in a high capacity forced action mixer. The mixture was then laid on the prepared gravel base and levelled off; allowing a curing time of four hours for foot traffic and one day for vehicles.

  • Ronacrete and Bendcrete bond with Ronafix

Skatepark designer and contractor Bendcrete have used Ronafix to strengthen and aid the bonding properties of a unique mix of recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) and cement based mortar. This formula is then spray-applied to the pre-shaped modules used to create the necessary ramps required by the riders of skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes!

Bendcrete have been using sprayed concrete in skateboard parks since 1996 and on climbing walls since 1972. They looked at using EPS in the mix to save weight, accelerate installation time and to be more environmentally friendly. However, introducing EPS into the mix affected the physical properties. After consultation with Ronacrete, Bendcrete researchers added Ronafix to the recycled mix to aid with bonding and overall strength. Some time was spent researching the material, so that it could be produced in larger volumes and effective at 1.2 and 2.5cm depth and after some perseverance a workable and effective material was arrived at.

“We have used the reconstituted material in three skate parks and achieved significant gains in production-time on site, as ready finished pre-shaped modules can be installed and sprayed with concrete within a day eliminating on site work that normally would take three days to achieve. The weight is working out at between 300-400kg/m3 which helps counter differential settlement and other stresses in the concrete. Ronafix provided the extra strength and bonding required for effective use in the skateparks.”

    Gordon Bendall, Managing Director, Bendcrete

  • Ronacrete products play a part in creation of a ‘vertical city’

The Shard building, fast becoming a prominent feature on the London skyline will have 80 storeys reaching 310 metres in height when complete, making it the tallest building in Western Europe. It will contain offices, restaurants, exclusive apartments and the Shangri La, a five-star hotel. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the Shard is described as a ‘vertical city’. Ronacrete products were used at foundation level to reinstate concrete at London Bridge Station, at the foot of the structure. Specialist contractor Dhesi Group met with the Ronacrete technical team to determine the best solution to the problem and to consider various products and systems. Ronabond HB40 and Ronabond Flowable Micro Concrete were selected for specification because the contractor needed to be assured of the quality of the product. The fact both products were pre-packed not only meant they could be easily be mixed on site, but also that there was less margin for error with the weighing of materials as only water needed adding to the mix. RonaBond HB40 is a high build concrete repair mortar, capable of repairing concrete from 6-75mm in a single layer and was used in areas where access was easy and a hand applied repair mortar suitable. The cured mortar is waterproof, frostproof and bonds extremely well to concrete and steel with the addition of Ronacrete Standard Primer. Ronabond Flowable Micro Concrete is a repair concrete used in place of hand applied mortars to repair and replace sections of concrete. Designed for pour and pump application, the material is poured into shuttering to reform concrete profiles. It is shrinkage compensated and provides high early and ultimate strengths. 27/10/2011

  • Resin bonded pathways helps keep park users fit

Boston Manor Park in Brentford Middlesex is a large historic park surrounding Boston Manor House which was built in 1623; today the park helps promote a healthy lifestyle to local residents by providing facilities for physical activities for all ages. The park contains tennis courts, a football pitch, a putting green, children’s adventure play area, teenage multi-use games area, and paths suitable for walking/jogging.
Specialist contractors Oakleigh Manor recently surfaced a new pathway in the park which is situated under the shadow of an elevated section of the M4, close to the GlaxoSmithKline UK headquarters. The work was carried out by Oakleigh Manor on behalf of Eurovia Ringway Group and Hounslow Borough Council.

Oakleigh Manor applied RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing to provide a hard wearing, slip-resistant and easily maintained finish to the paving, making it suitable for walkers and joggers. A pavement finished with RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing makes life much easier for people pushing prams or using wheelchairs than loose gravel surfaces without compromising the appearance. Rounded Sepia gravel was selected to blend with the surroundings and provide slip-resistance.
RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing is normally laid on concrete or asphalt and less frequently on steel or timber decks. The two component resin is mixed with a drill and paddle mixer and applied by roller or squeegee to the substrate. The aggregate is immediately cast into the resin and left to cure for four hours. After removal of loose aggregate, the paving is ready for immediate use.

  • Walkway for Westfield

Westfield Stratford City retail and leisure development situated in Stratford in East London is not only the largest urban shopping centre in Europe but is also the most environmentally friendly shopping complex in Britain. Built at a cost of £1.8billion, it contains 1.9 million square feet of retail and leisure space. Westfield Stratford City is located adjacent to the Olympic Park and will form the prestigious gateway to the Olympic Games in 2012.
There are 250 shops and over 70 places to eat and drink in the complex which includes a 17- screen, all-digital Vue cinema; 14 lane, All Star Lanes bowling and the UK’s largest casino. A pedestrianised street runs through the development, linking John Lewis at one end with Marks & Spencer at the other.

Specialist contractors Cemplas were employed to lay the surfacing element of the hard landscaping package, a key feature in the complex that covers over 3000m2. The surfacing system used was RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, a permeable paving system consisting of blended aggregates bound in a UV resistant elastic resin. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides an attractive porous pavement for pedestrians and light vehicle traffic. The inbuilt porosity prevents surface ponding of rainwater and allows water to drain naturally, feeding plants, natural watercourses or manmade drainage systems. The system is SUDs* compliant, in keeping with the environmental aims of Westfield. The elasticity of the resin means that there is a ‘give’ to the surface, this makes it more comfortable to walk on and provides resilience to localised pressure which could cause damage to surfacings with more brittle binders.

Golden Harvest aggregate was selected for the walkway from Ronacrete’s range of natural aggregates, each formulated for strength and appearance. The ultra violet stability of the resin ensures that as the surfacing ages, the appearance of the aggregates will not be spoilt by the discolouration that is characteristic of cheaper resin systems.

  • Stone carpet ‘quiet flooring’ worth making a noise about

Ronacrete has recently added a new product to its flooring range for commercial and domestic use.
RonaFloor Stone carpet has been laid in various retail establishments and work places including Ronacrete’s own headquarters. Director Simeon Osen explained:
“There is no better testimony as to how much we value this product than the fact we use it in our own entrance hall. It is slip resistant and easy to keep clean making it ideal for an area where people are continually coming and going in all kinds of weather. It is my belief that stone carpet will become increasingly popular in the domestic market as well as the retail trade when people realise how it combines the easy upkeep qualities of a hard floor with the more attractive benefits of carpet - easier on the eye, quieter on the ear and softer underfoot.”

RonaFloor Stone Carpet is a resin bound aggregate screed ideal for use in retail establishments, night clubs, bars, leisure centres, hotels, schools and colleges, anywhere requiring an attractive easy to clean flooring with slip-resistant properties.

Available in a variety of aggregate colours the surfacing will withstand heavy footfall and light traffic from trolleys. Warm air in the voids of the surfacing makes it warmer than solid hard flooring and the slight give in the system reduces the stress on feet and joints. The flooring is also quieter than other hard floorings with some noise being absorbed within the voids.

Stone Carpet has already been laid at the men’s retailer’s Spirit, where the proprietor was delighted with the result.

“I am really pleased at how stone carpet has brightened up my shop and was impressed with the variety of coloured aggregates there were to choose from. Not only does stone carpet reflect the quality of the products we sell but it is also practical in that it is easy to keep clean and is non slip. I would recommend it to any high street retailer.”

  • Paths for heroes

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system has been laid to the paved areas surrounding Tedworth House in Tidworth, Wiltshire. The paths were laid as part of a £17m project to transform the Grade 2 listed house into a Personnel Recovery and Assessment Centre (PRAC) for injured service personnel.

Architect Dan Curtis of BWA Architects contacted Ronacrete to discuss the range of options available for hard landscaping the grounds. After consultation with Ronacrete’s technical team, BWA chose RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing for its natural appearance, permeability and suitability for wheelchairs.

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides a strong, durable pavement, which is particularly suitable for wheelchair ‘traffic’ as wheels will not sink and get caught as they do in loose gravel paths. The porosity of the system makes it SuDS compliant, allowing water to drain to the base and ensuring that paths are free from standing water.

Golden Harvest was selected from the RonaDeck range of natural aggregate blends, each formulated for strength and appearance. The golden shade will not change over time because the elastic polyurethane resin does not degrade when exposed to Ultra Violet light.

The laying of the pathways took place over a two week period. First a macadam base was laid by Contractors Byrne and King to provide a firm foundation for the resin and aggregate. The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied as a two-component UV stable elastic polyurethane resin together with blended kiln-dried aggregates for mixing in a forced action mixer. Surfacing Contractors Prestec mixed the resin with a drill and paddle before it was added to the aggregate blend in the high capacity forced action mixer. The mixed material was then discharged onto the substrate, spread to level and trowel finished at a thickness of 15mm. After completion the paving was ready for foot traffic within 4 hours.

The forces charity Help for Heroes took over the historic building, which had previously housed an officers’ mess, in February 2011. The first group of personnel began using the centre in July 2011 and it should be operating to full capacity by September 2012. By completion date there will be 32 state of the art bedrooms, a cardiovascular wing, a climbing wall, tennis and hockey facilities, a Café and … resin bound paving.

  • New paths with links to the past

The National Showcaves Centre for Wales contains three caves; the Dan yr Ogof Showcave, which is the largest cave in Europe, the Cathedral Showcave and the Bone Cave, where bones of Bronze Age people were found. The caves and the stalactites and stalagmites within them were naturally formed, beginning around 315 million years ago, when water entering cracks and fissures in the limestone began to dissolve the rock, creating a cave system.

The paths leading up to and through the caves were man made in much more recent times!

The National Showcaves Centre can receive over 40,000 visitors annually and is an ideal wet weather attraction, so it is necessary for any paving used to be slip-resistant and durable.

The system used by the Centre for their paths is Ronacrete’s Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing which is a hardwearing surfacing system composed of a resin base and natural aggregates that offers excellent slip-resistance and can withstand the heavy footfall year after year.

Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing is normally laid on concrete or asphalt and less frequently on steel or timber decks. In this case the base was asphalt and because the asphalt’s surface was open textured, Ronadeck Resin Bonded Scratch Coat was applied first, to produce a smooth substrate for the surfacing. The two component resin was then mixed with a drill and paddle mixer and applied by roller to the asphalt. The special aggregate was immediately cast into the resin and left to cure for four hours. After excess loose aggregate had been swept off, the pavement was ready for immediate use. The client chose to use silver grey Guyanan Bauxite because the slip and wear resistance is unsurpassed and because the colour blended with its surroundings.

  • Jodrell Bank focuses on Ronacrete products across the decades

The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics in Cheshire has been in operation since 1945 when it was chosen by Bernard Lovell as the site for an observatory. It has since become a world renowned centre for radio astronomy, the launch of Sputnik 1 was announced to the world after detection by Jodrell Bank scientists and the site is listed for World Heritage Site status. Ronacrete products have twice played a small part in its history.

In 1987 the Department of Estates and Services of Manchester University, owners of the Jodrell Bank Complex, surveyed the telescopes concrete supports and discovered cracking and spalling. In consultation with Ashdale Concrete Ltd, they produced a repair specification based on Ronafix polymer admixture, to restore the profile of the concrete and provide protection from exposure to adverse weather conditions.

The damaged concrete was cut out to expose the steel reinforcement and loose rust and scale was removed. The surface was primed with a blend of Ronafix and Portland cement before application of Ronafix Mix Design D, BBA Approved concrete repair Mortar. Ronafix Mix Design D was chosen for its resistance to carbonation and its waterproofing and frost resistance.

A much more recent project, the new Discovery Centre, was completed in 2011. Landscape Architects Grant Associates chose Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing as the permeable surfacing to pathways for the landscaping works. The surfacing is required to withstand wear from foot traffic, quad bikes and vans. After researching potentially suitable materials, Grant Associates consulted with Ronacrete’s technical department before producing a specification.
The Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was laid by specialist contractor Route One Highways; an experienced applicator of Ronacrete’s hard landscaping products. Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing System is supplied as a two-component elastic and UV stable polyurethane resin and kiln-dried graded aggregates, to be blended on site. The aggregate component was placed in a high capacity forced action mixer and the two component non-yellowing resin was mixed with a drill and paddle before being mixed with the aggregate.
Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing was applied at a thickness of 15mm to the paths to provide an attractive, strong and slip resistant paving. The permeability of the SUDs compliant system prevents pooling of surface water. Visitors to Jodrell Bank are therefore able to keep their feet dry as they step confidently through the grounds, while appreciating the backdrop of the magnificent Lovell telescope. The resistance of the resin to ultra-violet light ensures that the resin will not yellow or darken and will remain elastic, lengthening the service life of the system.

Ronafix Mix Design D and the factory batched Ronafix Pre-packed Concrete Repair Mortar are high performance, water based polymer mortars for repairing concrete and protecting reinforcing steel. The repair mortars are designed last at least the life of the surrounding concrete and are suitable for structural repairs. It is waterproof, frost proof and very durable.

Safe from the sea – Grand Avenue Hove

Ronacrete products were used in the restoration of 1 Grand Avenue Hove, a late 1960/70s multi-storey private residential block situated in a prime seafront location.

As is common in coastal locations, the reinforced concrete elements of the building had suffered severe deterioration, including spalling to the concrete of private balconies and to ring beams. More critically, the ring beams supporting the outer brick skins of the flank walls had suffered serious structural damage, with an imminent risk of failure of the brick cladding.

The main contractor Ellis Builders of Eastbourne appointed Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Limited to undertake over £100,000 worth of specialist remedial repairs.

Before commencement of the repair works, Cemplas undertook a cover meter survey, carbonation testing was carried out and because of the seafront location, the chloride content of the concrete was measured.

Cemplas began the extensive remedial work by removing all the brickwork to the building’s outer skin and cutting off the the ring beams.

The ring beams were replaced with Ancon steel shelf support anchors, resin fixed to the remainder of the concrete ring beams, to provide support for the new outer skin of brickwork.

The concrete balconies were treated by shot blasting to remove the previous coatings. Several products from Ronacrete’s Concrete Repair & Protection range were then used to repair the concrete and to protect it from further damage.

Repairs to the concrete were made using Ronabond HB40 high build repair mortar. Ronabond Cover Plus 150 was used to provide additional protection to the steel reinforcement and final protection was provided by application of Ronabond Joltec waterproof, elastomeric anti-carbonation coating to the vertical concrete surfaces and Ronabond Zolpacryl anti-carbonation coating to balcony soffits.

  • Ronacrete has Haven Pool Surrounded

Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing has been used to provide a decorative, slip resistant surface to a sundeck and outdoor pool surround at Weymouth Bay Holiday Park, owned by Haven Holidays.
Contractors S Carter and Son laid macadam to provide a firm base for the Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing, which was then mixed and applied at a thickness of 15mm. The aggregate blend used on the sundeck was ‘Combe Haven’, a mix specially created for Haven Holidays for a similar project at Combe Haven Holiday Park. Quartz Parallel, another aggregate blend, was used for the pool surrounds.

Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing comprises a blend of graded aggregates, selected and formulated for strength and appearance, bound with a two part UV stable, elastic polyurethane resin. The finished product is permeable and provides Haven with a durable surfacing that because of its permeability prevents pooling of surface water. Because the Ronadeck resin is unaffected by ultra-violet light, Haven have the assurance that the appearance of the aggregate and the comfort enhancing “give” of the surfacing will remain unaffected by the passage of time.
Haven holidays were very pleased with the finished results and are planning to use Carter’s expertise and Ronacrete’s specialist products in projects at other parks around Britain.

  • Joltec protects Brighton apartments from sea damage for 20 years

For nearly 20 years, Sussex Heights has been protected against driving rain and airborne salts by Ronacrete’s Ronabond Joltec. Situated close to the West Pier, immediately behind the Brighton Hilton Metropole Hotel, Sussex Heights is a 24 storey landmark block of luxury apartments.

Sussex Heights was built in 1965 and was originally clad in mosaic tiles, but by 1990 it was clear that the tiles were no longer protecting the structure against water ingress from rain, driven by the prevailing South Westerly winds. To restore the building to its former glory and to prevent further damage, the tiles were removed, repair works were carried out and the entire building was coated with Ronabond Joltec.

Ronabond Joltec is a waterproof, elastomeric anti-carbonation coating, chosen to provide a rainproof envelope to the structure and protect the reinforced concrete against attack by airborne salts and acidic CO2 gases. Key to the specification was a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, underwriting the performance of the product and the application. The guarantee was the first to be underwritten on such a contract in the U.K.

By 2001 the Joltec coating was reaching the end of its 10-year warranty period and the client’s building consultant, Lambor Associates Surveyors, approached Ronacrete Ltd to prepare recommendations to re-coat Sussex Heights, to enable continual cover and a 10-year extension. Inspection of the existing coating showed that it was in good condition, free from defects and well bonded to the substrate, a testimony to the performance and longevity of the product in a very aggressive environment.

Ronabond Joltec Fibrous, a glass fibre reinforced Joltec coating product, was specified for the second contract, to provide extra durability and resistance to structural movement and substrate cracking, with a top layer of Ronabond Joltec to provide rain resistance and prevent dirt retention. A further 10 year guarantee was issued on successful completion of the works.

Concrete Repairs Limited, a contractor with specialist knowledge of concrete protection was awarded the contract to re-coat the building in two phases. The phases were carefully planned to be carried out over a two year period around the migration habits of the Peregrine Falcons that nest on the roof of Sussex Heights. The existing Joltec coating was cleaned and refurbished to a very high standard under difficult access conditions, requiring extensive use of cradles to provide a cost effective and timely solution to the client.

Daren King, Senior Contracts Manager for the project confirmed that

“The difference between the completed phase and original condition highlights the benefits that the application of the Joltec systems has made to the appearance of the block. The success of this project can be gauged by the fact that the residents and client are extremely happy.”

  • Accelerated screed for accelerated learning

School holidays are the perfect time for schools to develop their sites – especially on floors, when the kids and the teachers are off relaxing or studying and contractors have days or weeks to get in, remove the old and replace with new.

Somersham Primary School in Huntingdon decided to do just that, schedule works for Spring half term and install underfloor heating and a new screed and covering in two brand new classrooms.

The contractors levelled the concrete floor slab, laid a damp proof membrane and 75mm of insulation. Hot water underfloor heating pipes were then installed followed by a 75mm thick Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay floating floor screed to protect the insulation and bring to final floor level prior to fitting carpet.

The new building will be opened for use by the school at the beginning of the 2011/12 academic year. In order to ensure all works were completed in time the screed specification needed to be upgraded to dry out faster; so specifiers Capita Architecture included Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay, a liquid admixture manufactured by Ronacrete, in the site batched screed. A conventional 75mm sand and cement screed will typically dry out at the rate of 0.5mm per day in good drying conditions - a total of 150 days or 21 weeks - too long for this project. The addition of Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay would ensure the screed was suitably dry after approximately three weeks.

Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay admixture is easily and simply added to the screed as it is mixed; the screed is then laid using conventional screeding techniques. To monitor how quickly the screed is drying, the relative humidity (RH) is measured using a hygrometer. Once it has fallen to below 75% it is dry enough to receive vinyl or carpet. In good drying conditions, a 50mm Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay screed will be dry enough to receive moisture sensitive coverings after only 8 days without the need for a surface applied DPM.

Main contractors Ashe Construction appointed Unican Construction to install the 75mm floating screed. Two teams of screeders mixed and pumped the modified screed mix into the classrooms using a Putzmeister screed pump. 330m² of screeding was completed in one day and the screed was left to dry, measuring the RH as each day passed.

Ronascreed 8 Day Overlay has been used on many small and prestige projects including the Barbican Centre, Heathrow Airport, London Stock Exchange and Wembley Stadium.

  • Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing at Alton College – reaching the parts tarmac cannot reach

Alton College was built in 1978, making it the first purpose built 6th form college in the UK. Expansion of the college since the new century began has helped Alton College maintain its leading position. The college has achieved beacon status for educational excellence and Ofsted has twice judged all five areas of inspection to be Outstanding Grade 1.

In 2008, Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing and Ronadeck Tree Pits systems were chosen to complement the architecture of the Berkoff Performing Arts Centre, designed like several of the newer buildings by Macallan Penfold Architects. At the time, Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing was described as a “welcome relief from drab tarmac which does nothing to elevate the minds of those entering the college”. 300m2 of Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing was laid, helping to keep the minds of the college students on higher things for years to come.

Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing is a UV stable resin bound aggregate surfacing, functional and highly decorative.

  • Fast drying screed speeds up student accommodation refurbishment

Ronacrete screeding products were used in the refurbishment of student accommodation in Islington, North London. Contractors CCS Drywall Ltd installed nearly 1,000m2 of Ronacrete Ronafix Pre-packed Screed to the new 125 bed student accommodation. The refurbishment was commissioned by UNITE Group the UK’s largest manager of branded student accommodation. The scheme included 125 bedrooms, bike storage, common rooms and 1200sq.ft of commercial space.

“Our works were part of a refurbishment project to replace and repair existing screeds on a tight programme so that a wide range of floor finishes could be laid shortly afterwards. CCS chose to use Ronafix floor screeds to ensure that a quality hard wearing surface with rapid drying properties was achieved.”

Robert Birch, Managing Director, CCS Drywall Ltd

CCS pumped the screed across the seven storey building using a Putzmeister M760DHB screed pump. Screed thicknesses ranged from 10-50mm across the site and were laid bonded with Ronacrete Standard Primer.

  • M25 tunnel refurbishment uses Ronabond Concrete Cover 150

Ronabond Cover Plus 150, now called Ronabond Concrete Cover 150, played a part in a major project to improve traffic flow and safety on the M25 near Waltham Cross; a busy stretch of road taking 120,000 vehicles daily.

The £75 million project involved adding extra lanes to the Holmesdale Tunnel and upgrading lighting, ventilation, incident detection systems and CCTV in the tunnel. An extra lane was also added to the M25 eastbound through junction 25.

Part of the widening scheme involved partial removal of concrete, exposing steel reinforcement. Ronabond Cover Plus 150 was used to coat the concrete and exposed steel, thus returning reinforcement cover.

Ronabond Concrete Cover 150 is formulated to improve equivalent reinforcement cover to concrete where actual cover is low or absent. Ronabond Concrete Cover 150 is supplied as a pre-packed product, comprising liquid and powder components. It is mixed to form a slurry which is applied in as many coats as may be needed to produce the required equivalent cover. The appearance or concrete protection may be enhanced by application of coloured anti-carbonation coatings from the Ronabond range.

  • Ronacrete helps keep Manchester motorists moving

The M60 is the orbital motorway which encircles Greater Manchester and contains the busiest section of motorway in the country. As a result of heavy traffic coupled with a cold winter the tarmac around drains and manhole covers on the slip road at Junction 24 was breaking away, causing a potential hazard to motorists – and at the least a rough ride.

Contractors NMS Ltd were asked to provide a solution to this problem that would cause minimum disruption to commuters; it was also important that the repairs be effective in the long term so that future closures for re-repair could be avoided.

NMS specified two products produced by Ronacrete. RonaRoad Manhole Mortar to raise the frame round the manholes and RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair to fill the holes created by the failed tarmac.

“We wanted to keep disruption of the motorway to the absolute minimum and clear the traffic management from the carriageway as soon as possible. RonaRoad Manhole Mortar can support traffic after one hour and RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair can be trafficked immediately after laying proving both to be the ideal solution. These products also provide a permanent solution so we could reassure our client that further costly repairs and subsequent disruption would not be necessary.”

    Ian Williamson NMS

Other reasons why NMS chose to use RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair were that it can be laid in wet weather and at temperatures as low as - 20ºC and still remain pliable and easy to use. Also, as no mixing is required, the roadway could be repaired speedily simply by placing the product into the prepared recess and machine or hand compacting it ready for immediate traffic.

“The reason RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair offers a more permanent solution than traditional pothole repair products is because traditional cold-lay road repair products are made up of petroleum based solvents like diesel, toluene, kerosene and naphthalene to make them soft enough to use. These toxic solvents can attack and eat away at the other components in the products weakening the material and its bond to the road from the moment they are applied, RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair uses environmentally friendly zero VOC softeners, so this problem does not occur and the repair is permanent.

We are very pleased that Ronacrete products have played a part in making the M60 safer and in keeping the traffic flowing around Manchester.”

  • Fast drying screed keeps Tesco’s customers happy

The floor of a large Tesco supermarket near the centre of Birmingham was causing problems for customers pushing shopping trolleys. The underlying sand/cement screed had failed causing the floor tiles to lift. This not only made it difficult to push a trolley across the floor but also presented a safety hazard.

Tesco management understandably wanted to avoid disruption to the shop opening hours, so any repairs had to be permanent and quick so that the store was closed to trading for as short time as possible.

A special Ronafix modified screed was supplied ready mixed by RMC Mortars Limited of Lichfield, Staffordshire. The contractors, Telling (Midlands) Limited, then used a Putzmeister to pump the mortar through a 75 metre line to raise the mix from basement level to each of the two trading floors, where it was laid to a thickness of 65mm.

Within twenty-four hours the screed was able to accept foot traffic, and tiles were laid four to five days later, keeping to the strict time schedule, so the store could soon be re-opened and back in business.

  • Self levelling screed helps TV studio refurbishment

As part of a refurbishment of its Studio complex, Pinewood Studios in Iver, Buckinghamshire asked specialist industrial flooring contractor Aedean Limited, to lay almost 1,000 m2 of Ronacrete's RonaFloor SL self-smoothing epoxy resin screed in both Studio J and Studio K. The studios were being converted from film to television usage.

It is important for TV cameras to be able to move around the Studio smoothly without the slightest jolt, unlike film cameras which usually run on tracks, so RonaFloor SL was specified as it provides easy to clean finish that allows trouble-free removal of studio floor paints.

Studios J and K previously had film-style timber flooring covering a concrete floor laid in sections. This timber floor was removed, the concrete mechanically prepared after priming a thin layer of RonaFloor SL self smoothing epoxy screed was placed on top.

Depending on the programme being produced, each new set in the Studio may require the floor to be repainted with water-soluble peelable paint, and it is therefore necessary that the floor screed is able to withstand the constant application and removal of these paints. RonaFloor SL also provides good wear resistance with high chemical resistance, making it the perfect application in this situation. RonaFloor SL is available in seven standard colours, although special colours may be specified, the specification from Pinewood Studios was for a pale grey colour..

RonaFloor SL is applied to concrete at 2-4mm thick, and is resilient to a range of chemicals. Slip-resistance may be introduced by means of coating with RonaFloor epoxy coatings and scattering kiln-dried aggregate.

RonaFloor SL was also used in a refurbishment project at Maidstone television studios.

  • Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Protected by Ronacrete

In Hong Kong 200,000 kg of a specially modified form of Ronafix mortar was chosen for corrosion protection to the steel structure of the headquarters building of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation designed by Sir Norman Foster.

The Ronafix modified mortar was chosen for protection of the steelwork, after permeability and adhesion testing proved it to be the right product for the crucial task of protecting the structure from corrosion resulting from the humid marine environment. Without the protection of the two layers of Ronafix modified mortar, exposure to water and corrosive gases would have shortened the life of the building. The design life of the Ronafix protective layer was calculated as being at least 60 years.

The bulk of the concrete protection was applied off-site by sub-contractor Contech-Whitmor JV, to ensure that the shot blasting of the steel and spray application of the two layers of Ronafix mortar was done under the strictest quality controlled conditions. This meant that the mortar needed to be not only impermeable but also resistant to the impact and abrasion of being loaded onto junks, transported to site, unloaded and erected. After erection, welds and other parts that had to be left untreated were spray applied on site.

The total contract value for the construction of this world renowned building which has 44 storeys and covers 99,000 m2 was over $650 million.

  • RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair working in the Highlands at -23°C

Aberdeenshire Council took Ronacrete up on their offer to trial RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair on a local authority road and as a result are now using the product for pothole repair with very pleasing results.

Although there was initial scepticism about how well a cold lay product would work in a Scottish winter, RonaRoad GreenPatch performed well in the trials and remained pliable throughout.

However its true effectiveness was put to the test when RonaRoad GreenPatch was successfully used to repair a really large pothole on the A944 at the incredibly low temperature of -23.5°C. The council are also impressed by the convenience of RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair for emergency repairs because no heavy plant is necessary in its installation. Road repair crews simply have to pick up as many buckets as are required and take them to the site.

Ronacrete are happy to supply local authorities a free of charge supervised demonstration of RonaRoad Greenpatch Pothole Repair (this must be on a local authority road). There is no obligation to make a purchase unless as with Aberdeenshire council GreenPatch is believed to be the right pothole repair product.

  • Keen cyclist launches pothole repair product

Sales Director and keen cyclist Daniel Osen has launched a new pothole repair product in the UK as a direct result of encountering so many dangerous holes in the road while enjoying his hobby of cycling. RonaRoad GreenPatch Pothole Repair can be laid at temperatures down as low as -20°C and is ‘greener’ and more effective than other pothole repair products on the market.

Daniel, Sales Director of chemical construction products manufacturer Ronacrete enjoys cycling so much that he cycled the length of the UK for his 40th birthday. He now plans to cycle from the East to the West coast of America. However, while training for his American journey Daniel noticed a marked deterioration in the road surfaces.

“Several cold winters have taken their toll on the road surface making them much more dangerous for cyclists.” explains Daniel. “You often can’t see the potholes until you are almost on top of them and taking avoiding action can mean steering into the path of a car, especially on narrow country lanes.”

The combination of construction product salesman and cyclist in Daniel led him to make some investigations into pothole repair; he particularly wanted to find out why the repairs so often failed, with holes reappearing months or weeks later.

The Ronacrete technical team started researching the pothole repair market, talking to manufacturers, road repair contractors, and to local authorities. It was discovered that many traditional pothole repair products use solvents to make them soft enough to use. However, these solvents, which are based on petrol, diesel and benzene, actually make the product fail early. They are also not good for the environment as they can leach into the road contaminating streams and rivers.

After more research Ronacrete launched a new road repair product which addressed both these issues - RonaRoad GreenPatch.

Unlike other pothole repair products RonaRoad GreenPatch doesn’t contain damaging petrol solvents, but instead has a softener using biodegradable plant extracts. This has two distinct benefits. First the environmentally friendly softener prolongs the life of the repair, as toxic solvents can attack and eat away at the other components in the products weakening the bond from the moment they are applied, (one of the main reasons that holes reappear). Secondly because RonaRoad GreenPatch doesn’t contain the toxic softeners it is friendlier to the environment than other repair products.

The third unusual benefit of RonaRoad GreenPatch is that it can be laid at temperatures as low as -20°C remaining pliable in extremely cold weather. This is important because potholes appear as a result of water trickling into small holes in the road surface and then expanding when the water freezes causing the surface to break away. So potholes need to be repaired in cold weather because that is when they appear.

Daniel is pleased to report of the products success so far.
“Repairs using RonaRoad GreenPatch have so far been carried out on the M25, A40, M4 motorway and on other major and minor roads across the country. Most of the repairs are now many months old, lasting far longer than competitive repair products.”

  • Fast trafficking pothole repair keeps wheels moving at Toyota

The concrete access road to a Toyota dealership in Bracknell had become broken and uneven. Nike Construction, who are responsible for all maintenance work for the dealership group, were asked to find a long lasting repair product which could be laid without the dealership closing and with minimum disruption to customers.

The technical department of Ronacrete recommended RonaRoad EcoPatch Pothole Repair because it is easy to use and can be trafficked immediately. RonaRoad EcoPatch Pothole Repair is used straight from bucket or sack with no mixing required; it then just needs to be tamped and is then ready for traffic immediately.

    Other benefits
Speed is not the only benefit of RonaRoad EcoPatch Pothole Repair. It can be laid at very low temperature and in the wet, ensuring that road repairs can be carried out in the most unfavourable of conditions.  Most pothole repair materials rely on the use of cutback bitumens which contain volatile oils such as kerosene.  RonaRoad EcoPatch Pothole Repair does not contain petroleum based solvents, which attack asphalt and weaken the bond between asphalt and repair, one of the major reasons traditional pothole products fail and are therefore not permanent.  RonaRoad EcoPatch Pothole Repair contains plant extracts which do not act aggressively on asphalt and are friendlier to the environment.

    Product details
RonaRoad EcoPatch has a zero VOC softener and no petroleum cutback,
a 12 months bag shelf life (compared to one month on traditional road repair products) and no primer or over banding is required. It can be used in very cold weather (is workable down to -25ºC) and can be laid in the wet. As it is truly permanent (unlike many other products which claim to be), this reduces whole life costings.

    Comparison test and guarantee
Ronacrete are willing to undertake an on site product against product comparison test to prove its greater performance against a rival product.

  • Speedy screed replacement in Sainsbury’s

When the storage area on the first floor at the Lewes Road shopping centre in Brighton required a new floor topping, the main Contractor (The RG Group) called upon the services of specialist contractor Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete  Repairs Ltd, to provide a new floor surface suitable for pedestrian and pallet-truck traffic.

Cemplas had previously worked for the RG Group laying over 7000m2 of Ronacrete’s Ronafix Screed Mix A at the old Barkers store in Kensington, so they were familiar with both Cemplas and the Ronacrete screeding range. Ronafix Mix A screed is a polymer modified thin bonded levelling screed, which can be laid from 10 to 50mm thick. The strength gain of Ronafix Mix A meant traffic could be permitted after just 24 hours, fitting in with Sainsbury’s operational needs. The Ronafix Mix A screed was pumped directly to the store room, reducing down time and disruption to a minimum.

The existing floor was prepared with a Von Arx planing machine, providing a clean textured surface that was ready for treatment.  The floor was then primed and Ronafix Mix A screed was pumped into the storage area in a single operation. The screed was levelled, compacted and trowel finished to provide a new hard wearing storage area floor with minimal disruption to Sainsbury’s staff and customers.
