Pret opened in London in 1986. College friends, Sinclair and Julian, made proper sandwiches avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the 'prepared' and 'fast' food on the market today. The two of them had woefully little experience in the world of business. They created the sort of food they craved but couldn’t find anywhere else.
Pembroke College, founded in 1347 by Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke, is the third oldest of the Cambridge colleges and the first to have its own Chapel. Despite being located in the middle of the city, Pembroke presents a tranquil environment with varied architectural styles framing open courts and beautiful gardens. The College site, a quiet and welcoming series of open courts built around beautiful gardens, is an important part of this story. A tour might include the Old Library, parts of which date from the fourteenth century, and Christopher Wren's baroque chapel. Foundress Court, completed in 1997 to mark the College's six hundred and fiftieth anniversary, provides a new Master's Lodge and modern accommodation for ninety undergraduates. Alfred Waterhouse's Victorian Library has recently undergone imaginative renovation and expansion, to meet the needs of a new century.
Oatridge College was established in 1973 on its present site, 15 miles West of Edinburgh at the village of Ecclesmachan, specifically to serve the training and educational needs of farming. The University of Cambridge is now nearly 800 years old, and its unique 'collegiate' system has become a central part of the experience of studying here. All students at the University of Cambridge are firstly members of a College, studying in the many faculties and departments of the University. The University is responsible for the administration of the courses of study which lead to the award of degrees, and the Colleges provide for all the students' other needs - providing accommodation, communal meals, library facilities, sport and social facilities and a supportive academic community. Your choice of College is therefore a decision about the kind of place you wish to live and socialise during your time in Cambridge, as well as a choice based on the facilities available to you as a student member. Hopwood Hall College has been providing locally based higher education and professional programmes for many years. Many of our successful students have told us about the benefits of studying in the Hopwood Hall environment. Because our classes are smaller than those in universities, our students receive expert teaching and excellent support from tutors with better access to resources. Students also feel that they are part of a small and closely knit community. They stay the course, don’t drop out and succeed with their chosen qualification. To support progression to even higher levels of study, the college has a number of partnerships with higher education institutions.

Emmanuel is in the heart of Cambridge, in a main shopping area, yet is off the tourist track and never feels crowded or pressured. It is one of the larger colleges in Cambridge, a community of more than 600 people. At its head is the Master; there are some 80 Fellows, around 450 undergraduates and some 150 graduate students in residence at any one time, and a large permanent staff. The quality of the educational experience with which Emmanuel provides you will depend both on those who make their lives teaching and researching in this College - the Fellows - and on those who will share your time at the College as your contemporaries. That is why we take the process of selecting and admitting Emmanuel students, of supporting them while they are here, and of providing their teaching, so seriously.

The Queen's College is a college of Oxford University and was founded in 1341 by Robert de Eglesfield. He envisaged an establishment of fellows, chaplains, ‘poor boys’ and various officials and servants, headed by a Provost. Membership was to be open, but with a preference for inhabitants of Cumberland and Westmorland. Initially Queen’s was poor, but the endowment slowly grew. Crucially, in 1343, Philippa secured for Queen’s a small hospital in Southampton with its lands, destined to be the basis of much of the College’s prosperity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as Southampton Docks expanded and surrounding farmland was developed. After 1400 the preference for people from Cumberland and Westmorland became a monopoly, making Queen’s a community of north-westerners. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it prospered, and in Elizabeth’s reign, when it became one of the most popular Oxford colleges, there is growing evidence for the development of the tutorial system.
