They see patients sent by their family doctor (GP), brought to hospital by ambulance or patients attending with serious injuries or illness. Patients are assessed and given a priority on arrival you may not be seen in the order in which you arrived. If your condition is minor or easily treatable you will have to wait for patients with more severe illness to be seen. If you are suffering from a condition that has been causing you small discomfort but you would normally visit your GP or a dentist for treatment, it may be more appropriate for you to do this than visit A&E. If the nurses are not able to treat you they will refer you your local A& E department.
