The children have the opportunity to take French lessons with a qualified teacher during a lunchtime club that is provided by La Francais. Children in Year 2 have recorder lessons with a qualified perapetetic music teacher. Support is given to all children with additional guidance from the external School Sports Coordinator. Backwell itself is well povided for in additional ooprtunities for children to take part in a variety of sports clubs including swimming, ballet, football and tennis. The school is host to an after school club (Backwell Out of School Club) which operates independently on a daily basis between 3:15 and 6pm and caters for children from the Infant and Junior schools.

Children have a wide choice of after school and lunch time clubs including choir, orchestra, ICT, art and craft, card making, bible, French, football, environmental, nature and multi skills. This is a wide selection of clubs for such a small school. All children took part in an inter school event for sport. About 40% of chldren learn a musical instrument and take part in informal and formal concerts. Y5/6 children went to the Forest of Dean for a week long residential camp. Many children access the more able courses at Kilve Court with advice from teachers. All Y5/6 children have been involved in Youth Speaks which is a public speaking competition. The whole school went on a whole trip to St Fagans which was a great success and provided learning opportunities as well as fun.
