The Salvation Army is one of the largest, most diverse providers of social services in the UK after the Government. Founded in East London in 1865, we are now working in 120 countries worldwide. As a church and registered charity, we demonstrate our Christian principles through social welfare provision. Worldwide there are over 1.6million members, with programmes including homeless centres, drug rehabilitation centres, schools, hospitals and medical centres, as well as nearly 16, 000 church and community centres. The work of The Salvation Army is funded through donations from its members, the general public and, where appropriate, local authority and government grants.
Our slogan is 'Serving the community'. We help unemployed people, disadvantaged people, refugees and others concentrating on helping people into work. our activities range from operating apprenticeships to environmental issues like recycling, all of which are 'Serving the community'. Our roots go back to 1983 when members of the Bristol North West Scout District formed the charity in response to a government initiative to assist the unemployed. "Serving the Community" has been our maxim ever since and whilst the range of programmes has changed over the years as the company has evolved, we continue to focus on helping those who find themselves disadvantaged in society.

The Trustees of Bristol Municipal Charities were formed as a result of the Municipal Corporations (Reform) Act of 1835 and their first meeting was held in November 1836. They assumed responsibility for the administration of the Charities which, until that date, had been under the control of the Corporation of Bristol. Since then the administration of many other Charities has been taken over by the Trustees. The old charities were largely confined to the ancient City of Bristol, but by Orders of the Charity Commission, and in one instance by Act of Parliament, their benefits have been extended to the modern City boundaries and more recently to within a ten mile radius of the City Centre. One or two charities have countrywide application and a few extend their benefit areas into Gloucestershire and Somerset.
