Bartley Green Medical Practice has its origins in a modest health centre opened in 1977. This stood where our current car park is, and was demolished to make way for our new practice building in 1999. The present building was opened by the Lord Mayor in July 2000. It offers us more consulting rooms, more clinical areas, better accommodation for our health visitors and midwives, more administration space and enhanced facilities for teaching. Since the introduction of the new General Medical Services contract for practices, the practice provides core services and a range of direct and national enhanced services for patients. The practice building is open Monday - Friday from 8.15am - 6.15pm. It is closed all afternoon on Wednesday from 1.15pm. We will occasionally close at lunchtimes for staff training and practice meetings.

Probably the world’s longest continuously practiced holistic therapy, it is an ancient therapeutic art developed in China about 2000 years ago. Since then, aiming to treat the whole person, it has provided effective relief from all manner of disease and disorder for many millions of people, utilizing its time-proven capacity to promote the body’s ability to initiate its own healing processes. Acupuncture is mainly known for its modern application of controlling pain, though increasingly it is recognised as playing a valid role in primary health care based on current medical evidence. Many people find acupuncture beneficial with conditions where other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful, or when they are actively investigating realistic alternatives to prescription medication. Over the past four centuries, acupuncture has experienced its own unique development in the hands of the blind acupuncture masters.
Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures where it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine. It is now widely used and accepted all over the world, and in the UK more and more people are finding out what acupuncture can do for them. Acupuncture works to help maintain your body’s equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of ‘qi’, your body’s vital energy. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in symptoms of pain and illness. In certain instances, acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony. Treatment is aimed at the root of your condition as well as your main symptoms which helps with resolving your problem and enhancing your feeling of wellbeing.
Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or to relieve specific pains. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but have no obvious diagnosis or condition. Others choose acupuncture simply to enhance their wellbeing. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages including babies and children. It can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine. Traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation which means that it can be effective for a range of conditions. As acupuncturists treat the person, not just the condition which they have, each patient’s treatment plan will be different. However, you can always ask your practitioner about other patients’ experiences, to give you an idea of what to expect. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.
