Adam Summerskill first established a 2.5 Barrel brewery in his vineyard in St. Anne's Chapel, Bigbury in 1983. In 1984 he moved it to the White Lion in Stonehouse, Plymouth and again it was moved to 1985 to it's present premises, where it was also expanded to a 10 Barrel brew length with the purchase of the redundant Penrhos Brewery kit (Penrhos was owned by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame).

Our main brand Maxim Ale was first brewed in 1901 to celebrate the return of the Maxim gun detachment from the Boer War. Major Ernest Vaux (part of the original brewing family) commanded the detachment, which was part of the Northumberland Hussars. Initially the beer was reduced in strength because landlords complained of their customers falling asleep. In 1938 Vaux Breweries increased the beers strength and Double Maxim was born.

The Volunteers was the first pub Timothy Taylor bought in December 1859. It proved a wise investment, as this small, cosy bar has remained a very popular 'watering hole' for generations of Keighley drinkers, including volunteers from the Drill Hall just across the road.
