Reindeer were re-introduced into Scotland in 1952 by a Swedish Reindeer Herder, Mikel Utsi. Starting from a few reindeer, the herd has grown in numbers over the years and is currently held at between 130 and 150 by controlling breeding. Living in their natural environment out on the Cairngorm Mountains and the Cromdale Hills, this is a fantastic opportunity to encounter an animal living freely. Everyone will get an opportunity to lead their own reindeer as we wind our way along mountain trails. After resting the reindeer for a while at Utsi's hut, the trek will then return up through the forest and over the open moor to join the main herd of reindeer. There will then be an opportunity to join in with the daily feeding of the herd.

Services presently terminate at Broomhill, 3 miles from Grantown. In 2008 a new body, The Strathspey Railway Charitable Trust, was formed with the specific task of restoring this part of the former Highland Railway line to Grantown. This leaves the Strathspey Railway Company free to concentrate on running trains on the existing line from Aviemore to Broomhill and ultimately over the extended line when it is completed by the Trust. This new Trust gained Charitable Status in May 2009. This gives it access to various ways of raising funds which have never been available to the Railway Company or its related Supporters’ Association.
